Crag Stewards Victoria acknowledges the Wurundjeri, Taungurung and Dja Daj Wurrung Peoples as the Traditional Owners of Geburrh and their ongoing connections with it. We acknowledge the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of these Traditional Custodians and we pay respect to their Elders, past present and emerging.
Climbing and Bouldering
Easy access, lower grade trad climbs, steep sports climbs and a good range of boulders make Camels Hump one of the most popular climbing and bouldering locations close to Melbourne, particularly in summer. This popularity makes it especially important that climbers do what they can to protect his place.
Traditional Owners
Mt Macedon and Hanging Rock is an area that is of cultural significance to the Wurundjeri, Taungurung and Dja Dja Wurrung Peoples. Camels Hump falls in an area is not currently allocated to a RAP.
Management
Mount Macedon Regional Park is managed by Parks Victoria. A management plan is currently being revised.
Trails
A local group of climbers have done a wonderful job over the years contributing to the care and upkeep of the access trails, belay platforms and anchors. We ask climbers to please stick to trails and pay attention to any temporary or permanent signage aimed at protecting plants and erosion.
Please, also take care in where you put down you pack and equipment; aim for hard surfaces or flat ground where repeated use is not going to slowly erode soil. Avoid standing on or laying equipment on vegetation.
Toileting
With so many visitors, toileting is a critical consideration. It is not appropriate to bury human waste or toilet paper in this environment. There is a toilet only 650m from the crag at McGregors Picnic Area: just walk back to the carpark and follow the walking trail or drive along Cameron Drive towards the Memorial Cross
There are several places you can find public toilets on the way up to Camels Hump or nearby:
Macedon : Centennial Park https://goo.gl/maps/ss2d1krdteZWgAPx5
Mount Macedon : Stanley Park https://goo.gl/maps/MWBqLzwbh1xVpTf16
Memorial Cross Cafe
Urinating – of course it is feasible to do a tree wee near the crag, but please move at least 30m from climbing areas and do not leave toilet paper behind. If you bring toilet paper, just bring a spare zip-lock bag or two to put it in if you need to use it. See our section on toileting for more information.
Parking
This area is very popular with walkers and the car park can be very busy on weekends and will often overflow from the formal parking area onto the surrounding roadside. Please by considerate in how you park your car to allow for other users, particularly later arrivals.
Other Users
You are likely to meet other park users enjoying this area. Please be courteous, helpful and mindful of other peoples’ interests. Keep noise levels and language down.
Projects / Events:
Camels Hump has been well cared for by a local group of climbers for many years. Work completed in the past has included structural works such as the staging in the Omega Block area as well as track clearing and signage.
CSV is currently working with the local ranger to get a number of small projects underway – stay tuned.
